ABOUT PEARLS

The history of pearls traces back before ancient Roman times, where pearls - much like today - were symbols of wealth and prosperity. Pearls are cultivated throughout the world, primarily in China and Japan. Pearls come in many varieties, including Akoya pearls, Freshwater pearls, White South Seas pearls, and Tahitian pearls. The vast majority of pearls today are cultured pearls, which are grown using live oysters and are essentially identical in appearance to natural pearls.

While pearls are commonly used in necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, they are also used in designing custom art pieces and decoration. Mikimoto is famed for creating pearl "sculptures" and replicas of famous buildings.

Pearls vary drastically in price and quality. It is important to only purchase pearls from reputable online stores. Today pearls are worn by both men and women.
